Thank you so much for having me today, Chioma! I loved answering your questions and talking about my favorite subjects - books, writing, and movies!

Music plays a huge part in The Summer Before Forever, largely because it plays such a big part in my own life. Landon doesn’t like listening to music. That may sound odd for a teenage boy, but he has had some bad experiences that he associates with music, and so his answer has always been to avoid it. He’s a sports guy, anyway, so he listens to sports talk radio. 

Chloe is flabbergasted by the idea of someone not LOVING music. It runs deep to the core of who she is, and she treasures it with all of her being. So when asked to make Landon a playlist, she’s all on board!

While this book has a very specific playlist that is introduced throughout the story, Chloe has more tunes up her sleeve than she knows what to do with. So here’s another one she put together just for Chioma’s readers. Hope you enjoy!

Author Interview

1.)     What would you say is the most challenging part of writing a contemporary romance novel?

Most plotting classes include a villain and danger. We don’t have those things in straight up contemporary romance, so we have to find ways to keep it interesting. We all love the scenes where the characters are connecting and falling for each other, but we writers have to work hard to find that balance between sweet and precious and, “Okay, this is getting old.”

2.)     Which character was your favorite to write about and why?

You’re asking me to pick?! As much as I love Landon and Chloe, I probably would have to say Jenna. She’s such a mess, and she’s absolutely nothing like me, which makes her so much fun to write! I love slipping into her skin for her moments and getting inside her screwy head!

3.)     Describe the main character,  Chloe, in three words

Artistic. Cautious. Modest.

4.)     Describe the love interest, Landon, in three words

Hunky. Conscientious. Smart.

5.)     Any favorite summer songs you like to jam to in the car?

I’m totally obsessed with “Swings and Waterslides” by Viola Beach! http://bit.ly/1ThC2fH This song is best when played at a robust volume with the windows down (sunroof open if you have one!).

6.)     If you could only read books by one author for the rest of your life, what author would you choose?

You’re killing me here! Man, this is tough. I’m going to have to go with Sophie Kinsella. I adore that woman and her characters. I was walking through Target a while back listening to Can You Keep A Secret, laughing like a hyena by myself. I know people thought I was nuts.

7.)     What are some of your favorite movies of all time?

These questions are great! I love super quirky movies like 500 Days of Summer, The Way, Way Back, Death to Smoochy, and 200 Cigarettes (to be watched on New Year’s Eve). And anything quotable like Raising Arizona, Napoleon Dynamite, Office Space, The Big Lebowski, or the Vacation movies.

8.)     What do you like most about being a published author?

Oh, gosh, I guess just sharing the characters and stories I love!

9.)     Sitting down and writing a novel cannot always be easy, so what are your three biggest distractions while you are writing?

1. Hunger! If I’m hungry, my belly makes me go get a snack.
2. My dogs! They’re both just so cute and precious I have to give them both big hugs and smooches all the time. 
3. Big Brother. I gave it up for years but got sucked in this season. I spend an unhealthy amount of time wondering what’s going on in the Big Brother house.

10.)    What is the one thing you would hope your readers would get out of reading your book?

I want readers to know that they deserve love...the good kind. I want them to see it’s not okay to be treated poorly by anyone, and I want them to set their bar high!

11.)    Are there any current projects you are working on that you would like to share with us?

Book two in the Before Forever series! I can’t wait to share Jenna’s story with readers! You’ll finally see what goes on in that convoluted brain of hers! :)

What are three words you would use to describe yourself?

How did the idea of writing the Immortal Obsession series come about?

      I really started out just wanting to write a simple love story. The idea that everybody has that there is one special person out there if they only have the courage to search, they will find them. Before I knew it became the idea of; What if your guardian Angel loved you so much he would actually kill to have you? I also wondered what if we truly only have one soul mate what would happen if your soul mate refused to die?

How did you decide on the titles?

       Actually the titles in this series are a play on the main female characters names. The first three are all about Destiny and the last three are all about Destiny’s child Innocence.

What would you say is the most challenging part about writing a paranormal novel?

       You have to pull from your imagination while keeping the characters relatable because there are very few tangible things to help you along.

How would you describe the books’ main character?

      Damien is fiercely loyal to the point of stupidity. He is in love with the idea of being in love and it forces him to make extreme sacrifices.

      Zahir is like a powerful toddler. He starts off with the best intentions, but when he wants something he just takes it without any thought to the consequences.

Which scene was the most fun to write about?

      Actually Damien’s car accident. It was the most complicated scene to write also because I was trying to capture the feelings through my own car accident experience, but it was also the most fun. Not the accident, but adding an experience from my life into my book then exaggerating it was a fun challenge.

If you could read only one book for the rest of your life, what would it be?

     I think it would have to be Dale Carnegie's, “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. I am a shy and rather awkward person and this book has really helped me around people.

 If you could pick any profession other than being a writer, what would it be?

      I would continue to work at my current day job. Luckily I love challenges so my current job in IT offers everything I want in life. Well except twenty free weeks to travel and see the world, but I will see it in smaller chunks.

What is the one thing you would hope your readers would get out of reading your books?

     My books are there for entertainment. I do have solid themes such as love, friendship, loyalty and hope that readers walk away with a sense of hope that everybody deserves love and true companionship.

Last but not least, are there any current projects you are working on that you would like to share with us?

      I have always got a million ideas bouncing around. Currently I am working on the third book in my Immortal Obsession series where I get to follow Damien’s journey towards madness. I am also starting a new series called Dark Origins. Surprisingly fans asked about the backstory for my character's Death and Raven and Bane.

Author Interview

1.            How did the idea of writing Scar of the Bamboo Leaf come about?

I wanted to write about a local girl with a physical flaw that turns to art for solace. I wanted her to meet a misunderstood boy who she helps through traditional art. There’s a school for troubled American teens in Samoa, and that is how this boy ends up there. I grew up in Samoa. Next door to my childhood home is a local art center, which served as inspiration for much of the setting of this book. There’s actually a cluster of bamboo that borders the property and BAM--I had my location.

2.            How did you decide on the title of this book?

The title was the absolute first thing that came to me--before anything else. So little by little, I had to put the pieces together to make a connection with the characters and plot. The title is a metaphor, which becomes clear as you read the story.

3.            Where do you find the most inspiration for what you write?

From people around me. From music. From traveling. And reading.

4.            In your opinion what is the most challenging aspect of writing a novel?

Honestly, finding the time. Between motherhood, work, chores, and errands, it’s a balancing act, and when you throw in writing to that mix, it can get a little insane. I love to write, but sometimes I don’t like the person I become when I do.

5.            What scene or part of the book did you have the most fun writing and why?

The bantering scenes between Kiva and Ry. It was a good reprieve from all of the heavy stuff they had to deal with.

6.            How would you describe the main character, Kiva, in three words only?

Intuitive, strong, passionate.

7.            If you could only read books by one author for the rest of your life, what author would you choose?

Oooh, this is a tough one. There are simply way too many authors I admire, but I love Laini Taylor’s words. Her world-building is phenomenal, her characters loveable and humorous, her sentences like poetry strung together.

8.            Now I know from your Author Bio that you like to travel, so if you could go anywhere in the world that you have not been before on vacation, where would you go and what activities would you try there?

I love this question! Albeit a dangerous one LOL. Right now, I have the strongest desire to visit Portland, Maine, where my dad is from. My grandmother lives there, and I miss her. A lot. Plus, the scent of pine trees and Atlantic seawater smells like home to me. But since you asked about a place I haven’t been to before, I’ll say Bali. For the massages. And food.

9.            What is the one thing you would hope your readers would get out of reading your book?

That the story of Kiva and Ry touches their hearts. That despite the foreign setting, readers will be able to connect to the universal messages of faith and hope.

10.   Thank you so much for doing this interview and sharing your insight with us. My final question is: Are there any current projects you are working on that you would like to share with us?

Thank you for hosting me! I do have a story in mind, but I’m in the plotting phase at the moment. No title yet, but there’s a woman who owns a flower shop and she’s sarcastic and snarky with a soft heart. It’ll be a light, romantic read--a break from the seriousness of Scar of the Bamboo Leaf.

I’m not getting out of bed. I refuse. I don’t often indulge this way in self-pity. In fact, I almost never do. But today, goddamn it, today I’m giving myself the whole day to stay in bed, eat shitty food and feel sorry for myself.

The reviews were brutal.

Where Has Jackson Wall Gone?

            That’s how the first one began…      

Panned. Panned by every critic in New York City. I read them all. More than once. Every review said the same thing. They used words I never thought would refer to me. Lackluster, trite, boring, hackneyed. They asked if I was washed up, if I’d peaked at an early age and needed to retire.

I sleep most of the morning and around one, I indulge in a few beers.

            Around 5:00, there’s a knock at my door. It must be Cole. He texted me earlier after he read one of the reviews. I ignore the knock and turn on the TV. Another knock, louder this time. I storm over to the door and swing it open. “I told you I’m not going out!”

            “I figured that,” Kaitlyn says calmly. “That’s why I brought dinner in.” She walks past me, take-out bags in her arms.

            I sigh. Part of me can’t believe she’s here, but the other part doesn’t even want to see her. Or anyone else. Pity on their faces. But I can never be mad at Kaitlyn.

            “I got ribs and mashed potatoes. They always feel like comfort food to me.” She pays no attention to the fact that I haven’t gotten dressed today, or that I smell like a fucking brewery and it’s only 5:00.

She doesn’t mention that she walked out of my life.

            I stare at her. At her huge blue eyes that sparkle like stars when she’s happy. Right now they look cloudy and ominous. She’s worried about me. Her words may not tell me but her eyes do.

            “It sucked,” I say flatly.

            “Then why did you do it?”

            I lock my hands on my head and stare up at the ceiling. I let out what I mean to be a deep breath, but it comes out as more of a tortured groan. “I needed to write something. I needed to get past…” You, the emptiness I feel because of you, the way I’m tormented all the time now because I can’t be with you. “My writer’s block. I thought if I just pushed something out, everything would be okay.”

            She stares at me for a minute. Then she scoots off her stool and walks behind me. She puts her arms around me and clasps her hands together at my chest. She rests her forehead between my shoulder blades and sighs, “I’m sorry.”

            I breathe deeply but she doesn’t let go. Her arms remain tightly folded around my rising and falling chest. I close my eyes as she holds me and think even with all the terrible reviews and critiques, this might be the thing that breaks me.

Author Interview

How did the idea of writing At This Stage come about?

I’m usually inspired by conversations I have with people. Thought-provoking questions without any right or wrong answers have always interested me. The topic of conversation one day was impossible relationships. Long after the conversation was over, I found myself wondering what would happen if two people were thrust into a situation where it was inappropriate for them to be together. And could something happen over time that would change their circumstance and make the relationship okay after all? Thus, the inspiration for At This Stage.

When did you decide that writing a novel was something you wanted to accomplish?

I’ve always loved to write and have been creating stories in some form or other since I was a kid. So it was always something I wanted to do, even when life took me on other paths. This past year was the first time I had the opportunity to write a novel from beginning to end, and the process was wonderful.

Sitting down and writing a novel cannot always be easy, so what are your three biggest distractions while you are writing?

Well, I write at home, so my biggest distraction, or I should say my two biggest distractions, are my children when they’re home from school. They really are good about it though, and let me work when I need to. I also find it hard to ignore texts when they come through. Sometimes when I’m in a groove, I have to hide my phone so I won’t hear it go off if someone’s trying to contact me. One other distraction is focus. Most of the time, I’m good about concentrating on what I’m working on. But other times, I’ll get an idea for a completely different project. I’ll need to quickly jot down the idea somewhere, because if I don’t I’m afraid I’ll lose it and won’t be able to concentrate on the job at hand.

What scene or part of the book did you have the most fun writing and why?

I found the scenes where Jackson and Kaitlyn were being playful with each other a lot of fun. Like, when Jackson was teasing Kaitlyn about her lack of skiing ability, or when they were wrestling over Kaitlyn’s wax. I think small moments like that add a lot to real life, and I enjoy including them in what I write.

Writing the perfect ending to a novel can be quite a challenge. Did you find it challenging or did it just come naturally?

I didn’t have that hard of a time with the ending, because I had an idea of how I wanted it to go from the start. I actually found writing the scenes about Jackson’s brother, Danny, a lot harder. I wanted to make sure I depicted him the way I imagined him. Warm, loving, and as Jackson says, “awesome”. I also wanted to show how Jackson’s devotion to his brother influenced Jackson’s decisions. It was part of why he took Kaitlyn in to begin with and a big part of his writing. I even felt like Jackson was sort of testing Kaitlyn to see how she reacted to Danny. Luckily, she passed with flying colors.

Are there any writers who really inspire you?

I find so many authors inspirational. I admire writers who can intertwine characters and storylines seamlessly, like J.K. Rowling and Ayn Rand. I love all things dystopian society, so authors like Margaret Atwood and Suzanne Collins always inspire me. But I also love authors like Jessica Sorensen, who just make your heart bleed for their characters as you fall in love with them.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what 3 books would you bring with you?

I can only have three?? I think my answer would change with my mood. But today, I’d have to say Atlas Shrugged, Ten Tiny Breaths (one of my newly-discovered favorites) and anything by C.M. Stunich because I love everything she writes.

If you could spend the day with one literary character from one of your favorite books, who would you choose?

Anna Karenina. I’d love to pick that woman’s brain.

What is one thing you would like your readers to get out of reading your book?

I loved writing about Jackson and Kaitlyn at each stage of their relationship – from awkward roommates, to incredibly close friends to much more. I guess I would hope readers enjoy watching them go through this transformation, and fall in love with them a little bit along the way.

Are there any current projects you are working on that you would like to share with us?

Griffin is a character I didn’t initially intend to be in the book. The more I wrote about him, though, the more I connected with him. I became very curious about what made him tick. So now I’m writing Griffin’s story. Knowing his back story, about his family, what got him into sculpting to begin with and why he’s so brooding, makes me love him even more. I’m also working on a young adult novel that is not connected to At This Stage, which is centered around family dynamics

Everything happened so fast I couldn’t even react. Stunned, I just stood there for a moment trying to size up my attacker. Before I even glanced up to look at his face I could tell something was off with him, but because of my nervousness, it was hard to tell for sure. Author Interview

1.) What do you think makes you unique as an author?

 I don’t know if I would describe myself as unique, but I definitely like to think outside of the box. As I grow as an author, and consistently develop new plots, I come to realize that I enjoy pushing the story beyond what readers would expect.

2.) How do you develop your writing ideas and find inspiration for your characters?

Ideas or concepts pop into my head when I least expect them. When they do I work with what’s in my head until I have a working plot, and believable characters. The character’s personalities come from how I both see them in my head and how I think they would react to certain situations. 

3.) If your book was to become a movie, who would you want to be a part of the cast and which character would they play?"
