“And when it falls into silence again the void it echoes fills me with wonder. Wonder only because I no longer remember if this small entity isn’t real or if it whispers the truth.”
-Moonlight

C. Streetlight’s memoir, Tea & Madness, is a collection of prose and poetry separated into the seasons of her life. Each season is inspired by her experiences: grieving a lost baby, understanding depression, anger, betrayal, surviving rape and the acceptance that she cannot forgive. Balanced somehow within the darkness is the wonder in motherhood and empathetic relationships. As her seasons change, she continues trying to find the balance of existing between normalcy and madness.

My Review

Tea an Madness is a compilation of short stories and poetry based off of the life of the author, C. Streetlights. By reading this memoir, she takes you into her world and thoughts which are both joyful and heart wrenching. The writing style in this book is just so beautiful, yet not too overally done where it makes it cumbersome to read. I really enjoyed the themes present in this book and how they were portrayed. She talks about both the highs and lows of her life and you can see through all of it she was able to stay strong and hopeful. With each experience she shares, it is apparent that they have all made her into what she is today.

This book is VERY quotable. While reading it I hilighted so many quotes I thought were beautiful. It was not hard to relate to many of her passages. She talks about many hard topics like rape, death, and depression in the book. Her story about being raped and the death of her child were very sad, but at the same time empowering because even through hard times, C. Streetlights shows you can come out of them even stronger than before.

Now where does the tea come in? Well there was a very fun, interesting part at the end of the book that gives a tea 101 and basics. I am sure anyone who loves their tea will really appreciate it. All in all, I enjoyed reading this quick, inspiring memoir.

About the Author-
She has met many fools, but admires Don Quixote most because he taught her that it didn’t matter that the dragon turned out to be a windmill. What mattered was that he chose to fight the dragon in the first place.

Streetlights now lives in the mountains with a husband, two miracle children, and a dog who eats Kleenex. She retired from teaching so she can raise her children to pick up their underwear from the bathroom floor, to write, and to slay windmills and dragons. She is happy to report that she can finally see the stars.

Eve: The Awakening by Jenna Moreci ~ Impeccable Reviews

Series: Eve #1
Publication Date: August 12, 2015
Publisher: Jenna Moreci
Genre: New Adult, Sci-Fi
Format: eARC (from author)
Page Count: 547

Eve is an outcast. A chimera.

After years of abuse and rejection, Evelyn Kingston is ready for a fresh start in a new city. The esteemed Billington University seems like the perfect place to reinvent herself—to live the life of an ordinary human.

But Billington is harboring a secret of it’s own. Interlopers have infiltrated the university, and their sinister plans are targeted at chimeras—like Eve.

Instantly, Eve’s new life takes a drastic turn. In a time filled with chaos, is the world focusing on the wrong enemy? And when the situation at Billington shifts from hostile to dangerous, will Eve remain in the shadows, or rise up and fight?

My Review

My expectations: A thrilling science fiction novel following a girl that wields a unique power and goes on a quest of some sort to save the universe all wrapped into an amazing plot. (Let's just say, I set the bar was high on this one)

Reality: A Sci-Fi novel that was engaging, action-packed, and emotional all at the same time with a great main character and great supporting characters all wrapped into one dynamic (*wink, wink* book reference) plot. So basically, that translates into AMAZINGNESS!

I had a lot of faith that Eve: The Awakening was going to be great, but HOLLY BALLS (*wink, wink*)! It was even better then I expected. Eve, the protagonist, is a chimera who has had a rough life due to her "special" condition and a cycle of tragic events she keeps finding herself in. She starts attending Billington college in hopes she can turn her life around for the better, but when her new safe haven becomes threatened by Interlopers (aka nasty, evil aliens), she is forced out of her comfort zone and her talent was put to the test.

I knew I would like Eve from the very beginning because of all her sarcasm and spunk. She is a very admirable character in the way she still stays put together even after all the hardship she has been through and continues to go through. Her love interest was not a stalker, (Thank God!) but a genuine, likable, and not over-controlling character. These traits are actually hard to come by in books, especially if you read YA novels. Thank you Jenna for not making your characters bland. I liked the inclusion of Asians and people with different sexualities.

I found myself becoming so emotionally invested in many of the characters. Jenna created so many lovable and hateable (I don't even think that's a word) characters. Eve creates her own little interloper fighting crew in the novel and I adored them all! The relationships they had with each other and their teamwork against the interlopers was all just perfect. I also loved the concept of being a chimera and wielding the power to move objects with your mind (so basically telekinesis). It is so sad how chimera are treated like evil creatures in this futuristic society when really, chimeras hold this amazing power that can be so helpful. Low key, I kinda wish I was a chimera now, but....only for their talent.

The pacing was spot-on in this book! The action just kept on coming and I was NEVER bored of the plot. It had me hooked until the very end. It was hard to yank my eyes off the page because I was so eager to see what was coming next. On top of all this, I very much enjoyed the writing style in the book. It was descriptive enough for me a to paint a picture in my mind, but not overly descriptive and it gave the book a nice tone. Even though it was told in 3rd person, I was still able to feel connected to the main character's actions and feelings. The romance between the protagonist and the love interest actually felt real! It did not just come out of no where and it had a steady build up. I just wish the book had given a little bit more background information on how the chimera's and interlopers emerged and their origins, but hopefully we will get a little bit more information in the next books,

Conclusion: Eve: The Awakening was an amazing start to a Sci-Fi series I know will continue to be amazing. This book will definitely be added to my list of favorite books of the year and I am dying to get my hands on the sequel. I recommend this book to everyone!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow

Hosted by: Breaking the Spine

Publication Date: September 22, 2015
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction

A world battered by climate shift and war turns to an ancient method of keeping peace: the exchange of hostages. The Children of Peace - sons and daughters of kings and presidents and generals - are raised together in small, isolated schools called Prefectures. There, they learn history and political theory, and are taught to gracefully accept what may well be their fate: to die if their countries declare war.

Greta Gustafsen Stuart, Duchess of Halifax and Crown Princess of the Pan-Polar Confederation, is the pride of the North American Prefecture. Learned and disciplined, Greta is proud of her role in keeping the global peace — even though, with her country controlling two-thirds of the world’s most war-worthy resource — water — she has little chance of reaching adulthood alive.

Enter Elián Palnik, the Prefecture’s newest hostage and biggest problem. Greta’s world begins to tilt the moment she sees Elián dragged into the school in chains. The Prefecture’s insidious surveillance, its small punishments and rewards, can make no dent in Elián, who is not interested in dignity and tradition, and doesn’t even accept the right of the UN to keep hostages.

What will happen to Elián and Greta as their two nations inch closer to war?

Hold on a second. Can we just take a moment to appreciate how AWESOME this synopsis sounds? I mean if that right there does not explain why I am so excited for this book to be released, I do not know what will! Mark your calendars because it comes out in a little less than 2 months from now! Wow I didn't realize how long that actually is *tear*

The Interview

Thank you J.D. Selmser for participating in this interview. Here are the 12 questions I asked him.

What are three words you would use to describe yourself?
Romantic, dreamer, loyal

What is it that you value the most?
Family

What authors are your biggest influences?
Stephen King, J. R. R. Talkies, C. S. Lewis

How did the idea of writing the Immortal Obsession series come about?
I really started out just wanting to write a simple love story. The idea that everybody has that there is one special person out there if they only have the courage to search, they will find them. Before I knew it became the idea of; What if your guardian Angel loved you so much he would actually kill to have you? I also wondered what if we truly only have one soul mate what would happen if your soul mate refused to die?

How did you decide on the titles?
Actually the titles in this series are a play on the main female characters names. The first three are all about Destiny and the last three are all about Destiny’s child Innocence.

What would you say is the most challenging part about writing a paranormal novel?
You have to pull from your imagination while keeping the characters relatable because there are very few tangible things to help you along.

How would you describe the books’ main character?
Damien is fiercely loyal to the point of stupidity. He is in love with the idea of being in love and it forces him to make extreme sacrifices.

Zahir is like a powerful toddler. He starts off with the best intentions, but when he wants something he just takes it without any thought to the consequences.

Which scene was the most fun to write about?
Actually Damien’s car accident. It was the most complicated scene to write also because I was trying to capture the feelings through my own car accident experience, but it was also the most fun. Not the accident, but adding an experience from my life into my book then exaggerating it was a fun challenge.

If you could read only one book for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I think it would have to be Dale Carnegie's, “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. I am a shy and rather awkward person and this book has really helped me around people.

If you could pick any profession other than being a writer, what would it be?
I would continue to work at my current day job. Luckily I love challenges so my current job in IT offers everything I want in life. Well except twenty free weeks to travel and see the world, but I will see it in smaller chunks.

What is the one thing you would hope your readers would get out of reading your books?
My books are there for entertainment. I do have solid themes such as love, friendship, loyalty and hope that readers walk away with a sense of hope that everybody deserves love and true companionship.

Last but not least, are there any current projects you are working on that you would like to share with us?
I have always got a million ideas bouncing around. Currently I am working on the third book in my Immortal Obsession series where I get to follow Damien’s journey towards madness. I am also starting a new series called Dark Origins. Surprisingly fans asked about the backstory for my character's Death and Raven and Bane.

Will Sadie accept her new reality or will she stay lost?

My Review

Lost was the story of a girl named Sadie who is a Caelian. Caelians are descendants of those who experienced a change in DNA during an event in WW1 and most of them carry a talent of some sort. Except Sadie, she cannot find her talent and has become depressed due to the loss of her boyfriend to Caelian violence. She runs into trouble while discovering the secrets of her family and her abilities. I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did, but I am definitely so glad I did!

This book's plot holds your attention and keeps you engaged. There was never a time I felt like the story was just dragging on and the plot never got boring. Donielle Tyner paced the book beautifully all the way until the end. It keeps you on your toes! I never had a clue where the plot was going and I enjoyed this aspect of my reading experience very much. The ending was no cliffhanger, but I am still eager for the next book. Thank you Donielle for sparing my heart some ache with a decent ending for a first book in the series.

Now the plot was great, but I believe the characters are what really played a key part in my enjoyment of this book. Sadie was a great protagonist who was strong yet flawed enough to be believable. Kian (the love interest) was creepy at the beginning in the way he followed Sadie around, but he had his reasoning and at least Sadie did not pretend being stalked was all fine and dandy (like some YA novels I know). All of Sadie's friends were really great supporting characters. It made me wish I had friends similar to them. Lost by Donielle Tyner really had the full package. It was a quick and satisfying read.

excerpt
I put my phone back in my back pocket. Crossing my arms, I looked up at the stars again. The night was devoid of clouds, unusual for spring. Golden stars glittered across the heavens, winking at me from the endless arch of the void and transporting me to a place of tranquillity. The peace of space poured into my soul.
“What’s a Liam moment?” Kian’s gruff voice whispered. I felt his hot breath caress my ear. His closeness both startled me and sent a shiver down my spine. I straightened my back.
“I thought I told you I wasn’t interested.” I attempted to make my voice sound forceful, but it came out soft. I felt the heat from his body as he stepped closer to me.
“What’s your name?” Kian asked. The gruffness of his voice from earlier had left. This new voice was smooth and flowed like poetry. My heart sped up and I heard the blood pulsing in my ears. I was sure he could hear it. What kind of Talent was he using to cause me to react this way?
“Quit using your Talent on me,” I hissed.
“I’m not. If I was, you’d know it,” he replied with a chuckle.
“Oh.” I didn’t understand what was happening. He placed a hand on my waist and the warmth was searing. I was sure it would leave a mark. My eyes closed and my breath deepened. Tingles flowed from his hand, spreading throughout my body and stirring something in my soul. I released a breath I didn’t realize I had been holding. “Take your hand off me and back away before I break your fingers.”
Kian snickered. “Spunky.”
“Creepy,” I replied.
Kian chuckled again, his hot breath shooting sparks right to my stomach.
“Don’t make me ask again.” I felt his hand tense. His fingers increased their pressure against my waist right before the coldness swept in as he removed his hand. I released the breath I was holding.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Way to Never by O. E. Boroni

Hosted by: Breaking the Spine

Series: The Never Trilogy #2
Publication Date: July 25, 2015
Publisher: Wave Corporation
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary Romance

*WARNING: This synopsis contain spoilers for the first book The Beginning of Never by E.O. Boroni so read at your own risk!*

Nathan Roque first met Lenora Baker, a beautiful, exasperating, and bitter girl when she was just fifteen years old. He fell so deeply in love with her that he suspected that in his lifetime, nothing else could ever mirror the kind of commitment that she drew out of him. But she is left heartbroken when an unfortunate incident drives them apart.

Thirteen years later, he sets out to reach out to her when he can no longer resist the consuming thoughts of her that have haunted him for so long. However, the same demons that caused him to let go of her in the first place are still holding him back. But when he is thrust into a situation where he has no choice but to become professionally involved with her, a Pandora’s Box of angst, resentment, and passion is unleashed.

Now they are forced to make the decision on how to proceed. But will it justify the one that they made in the past, or will it mock it?

As some of you may already know, I am very much a fan of YA contemporary romance novels (Especially when they are by people like Rainbow Rowell and Stephanie Perkins). I was really interested in this series after I saw the synopsis for the first book and I picked it up. I very much enjoying the first book and I actually posted a review for it yesterday. Check it out here. I am so ready to continue on to this next book because I need to know what happens next to the characters. The last book just left me heart broken. Only 3 more days!

The Beginning of Never by O.E. Boroni Review & Giveaway ~ Blog Tour

Publication Date: April 26, 2015
Publisher: Waves Corporation
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary Romance
Format: eARC (from author)
Page Count: 326

Twilight meets Eleanor and Park in this contemporary romance story about a love that insists on forever.

When Lenora Baker and Nathan Roqué run into each other in their boarding school courtyard, they have no idea that they are about to begin a journey that will take them the rest of their lives to recover from. Both scarred from parents who were once in love but ended up destroying each other, they are sworn off the possibility that there can truly exist a love that will never end.

But when with each other they find a passion so strong that it heals as powerfully as it burns, a love that will run out is no longer an option for them. Together, they discover just how far they are willing to go to preserve what they know they will only find once in their lifetime.

This is the start of their journey, and here you will come to realize, that falling in love is only the first part of the story...

My Review

The Beginning of Never was a wonderful and engaging story of young love and the drama that can come along with it. Lenora Baker attends a boarding school in the UK and has been bitter and depressed since her mother died. Her life soon crosses paths with Nathan Roque's and her life all of the sudden becomes more complicated than she ever expected.

This book had one of those addictive romantic plots where I was always eager to know what was going to happen next in Lenora and Nathan's relationship. I caught myself breaking into a few giggles here and there while reading the story and then at times becoming disheartened or worried for the characters when events shifted negatively. The book and how the plot flowed reminded me a lot of Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins in many ways. That being said, the book did carry its own uniqueness about it and how the romance turned out.

Lenora was a very interesting female protagonist because of her slight temper problem. It would cause her in multiple occasions be thrown into uncontrollable rage and cause her to act without thinking. Nathan, on the other hand, was the school's popular and mysterious heart-throb who always held the appearance that he was calm, cool and collected. Soon the two meet and increasingly grow fond of each other, except they are hesitant due to fear from past family issues and experiences. It bothered me for quite some time that every female (except for Lenora) proved to be quite frustratingly annoying and/or unnecessarily cruel. I was very relieved when a sensible female character, Elisa, was introduced and grew to be a good friend to Lenora. Though the relationship between the protagonist and love interest caused a lot of petty high school drama, it was also very cute to watch play out.

I have to admit the ending of The Beginning of Never left me a bit shocked and empty. As soon as I finished the last page I was longing for the next book. I will definitely be very impatiently waiting for the sequel because I needed it like yesterday. Well done E.O. Boroni!
